The Memory Foam Latex Mattress Is Gaining Popularity

Many industry observers point to the use of latex as the newest, greatest trend toward the manufacture of memory foam mattresses. Top line manufacturing companies are now adding products and full lines employing these latex mattresses. Although quite popular throughout Europe, their introduction to the U.S. market is recent as expected to grow in popularity.

However, before you rush on out to your nearest mattress sale, take a little time to become self-educated about a latex memory foam mattress. Armed with good information, your research will prepare you to make a good decision and wise investment.

Latex is a very dense substance that comes from the sap of rubber trees. Synthetically produced latex was first discovered during World War II as a substitute for natural rubber. Scientists were capable producing this "artificial" rubber with all the same characteristics as its natural counterpart. Today, consumers do have a choice choosing either an all natural latex product or a combination of synthetic and natural. Most of the commonly marketed memory foam latex mattresses use a combination of both that manufacturer's claim makes the product perform more efficiently at less cost. Research presents, however, little difference between the two, making choice a personal preference. Some people tend to go the "natural" route but should be well aware the cost is considerably higher.

Additionally, there are two types of manufactured latex memory foam mattresses. The Dunlop mattress and the Talalay mattress.

The Dunlop method is the traditional approach to creating a latex memory foam mattress and dates back to the early 50s. This method produces a mattress that uses all natural ingredients and many manufactured decades ago are still in use today. These products tend to have a more springy aspect to their feel and use.

The Talalay method produces what manufacturers claim is a less densely constructed product that employs the use of circulating air to a greater degree than Dunlop. Additionally, this method for manufacture can be used with natural, synthetic or a combination of both. However, since it is a relatively new development, products manufactured with this method have yet to pass the test of time.

Typically, a memory foam latex mattress is made with a 5-6 inch core that is dotted with holes that help to soften the latex to acceptable comfort levels. Although some products offer uniform comfort levels produced by employing same size holes throughout the construction, more today employ a “zoned” approach. This zoned approach uses different sized holes providing various density levels that adjust to different comfort needs for different parts of the body. So, your latex memory foam mattress will adjust the comfort area differing between your hips and shoulders. The product sort of “remembers” the density needs called for from the pressure applied by the different parts of your sleeping body.

There are many bed manufacturers offering latex-based mattresses in their bed lines. Be careful and be aware that you need to find out if the bed offers a "memory" foam version of a latex mattress.
